What is "mas/mas"?
Masu in Japan
Masus have been used in Japan for more than 1300 years
as measuring cups mainly for rice, salt, and sake.
The current size was established about 345 years ago and has not changed since.
Masus were made of Hinoki wood, which is the Japanese cypress.
In modern Japan, “kagami biraki” (a ritual when celebrating a new beginning) is a popular ceremony during weddings and anniversaries.
Masus are commonly used as sake containers during these events.
What is "mas/mas"?
"mas/mas" (pronounced masu masu) sake boxes (called masu in Japanese) are
made of acrylic resin, which have a higher transparency than glass.
Light but sturdy, the thickness of the masu is well adjusted for women to drink out of.
They can also be used as containers for condiments and snacks, and not just as sake cups.
With a simple design using only straight lines,
our masu have traditional and seasonal patterns on the surfaces
engraved by the hands of skilled craftsmen.
We also take custom orders for your special ocassions.
